IAPD recognizes Sheffield Plastics exemplary Responsible Care policy
Sheffield, MA - At the 54th annual International Association of Plastics Distributors Convention, Sheffield Plastics A Bayer MaterialScience LLC Business was recognized this year for its exemplary Responsible Care policy. The internal guideline provides a planning tool for site managers to establish long-term and short-term health, environmental, safety and security objectives and action plans that are incorporated into the business’ strategic planning process.
Patrick Foose, current IAPD president and Howard Natal, incoming president, presented the Environmental Excellence Award to Steven Rada and Tim Ryan of Sheffield Plastics. Mr. Foose said “The IAPD association recognizes one company that has demonstrated innovative or exemplary environmental responsibility and impact. The Environmental Committee and Board of Directors found Sheffield Plastics systemic and deliberate approach impressive.” The committee also noted Sheffield’s commitment to the environment and sustainability programs.
According to Steven Rada, Director of Manufacturing, “Sheffield Plastics is committed to Environmental Excellence, as demonstrated by the facility's Responsible Care policy. It provides a planning tool for site managers to establish both long and short-term Health, Environment, Safety and Security (HESS) objectives, along with strategic action plans that are incorporated into the overall Business Strategic Planning. These objectives and action plans help us achieve an injury-free and secure workplace. It also helps in the reduction of waste and releases into the environment.”
A major program that Sheffield Plastics has embraced is converting waste that would have gone into the landfill, into an alternative energy source. According to Tim Ryan, HESS/Manufacturing Manager, “We’ve shipped 100 ton of waste which International Paper Products converted into solid fuel cubes that are clean burning, low emission alternative fuel substitute for boilers in coal burning power plants. Our goal is to recycle 80% of our waste into fuel cubes by 2011”.
Further, in September 2010 Sheffield began the process of accreditation to the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care© Management System. Certification involves a review of site environmental practices, written protocols and performance against key performance indicators.
